First aid is the initial part of care for an injury. It is typically performed by a layman as a stopgap measure until health care professionals can assess the injury. First aid procedures are fairly simple and use minimal equipment, but they can be life-saving. First aid can be performed on animals, but more commonly refers to the care of human patients.
