Asbestos is a naturally-occuring silicate mineral. It has been used as a building material because of its strength; however, the inhalation of asbestos fibers is extremely harmful. It can cause malignant lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis. Currently many countries around the world have banned the use of asbestos.
